Shou Sugi Ban (also called Yakisugi) is an ancient Japanese technique of charring wood to create a durable, weather-resistant material. The controlled burning creates a carbon layer that helps protect the surface against moisture, UV, insects and rot. Charring alone does not give a fire classification: the reaction-to-fire class (EN 13501-1) depends on the species, thickness and any fire-retardant treatment.
Service life depends on the species, char depth, exposure and finish. Charred cladding is known for decades of service with little maintenance, because the carbon layer shields the wood beneath from moisture and UV. With a suitable oil finish it performs well in harsh European climates.
The charred carbon layer protects the surface against moisture, UV and insects, which is why Shou Sugi Ban has traditionally been used without chemical preservatives. Where a finish is needed, we apply oils chosen for the project and can send you their safety data sheets. We also offer modified woods (Accoya®, Kebony®) and reclaimed timber.
