1. Timber Species
Charred Wood® by Leforest is made from species chosen for each application: Canadian cedar, Douglas fir and Nordic softwoods. The species is stated in every quotation.
2. Protection by Charring
Shou Sugi Ban protects the surface with a carbon layer created by fire, which is why it has traditionally been used without chemical preservatives. Where a finish is needed, we apply oils chosen for the project and can send you their safety data sheets.
3. Modified Woods
Accoya® and Kebony® are softwoods modified by their manufacturers, by acetylation and furfurylation, to give them durability that the manufacturers compare to tropical hardwoods. The Accoya® material is Cradle to Cradle Certified® Gold, and both manufacturers publish Environmental Product Declarations (EPDs) with life-cycle data.
4. Reclaimed Timber
Our reclaimed barn wood is salvaged from dismantled structures and reused, so no new trees are felled for these boards. The artificially aged collection is new timber given an aged surface.
